Five consecutive years of turnover growth is no mean feat in a growing economy, but it becomes a Herculean effort if its achieved when the economic climate is the toughest for more than a generation. So it’s time to take our hats off to our Yorkshire and Humber Growth 100: businesses that have continued to grow consistently over the past five years, despite rising raw material costs, public sector cuts and ransacked consumer finances.
In 2006, no-one could have predicted the length and the severity of the recession that lay around the corner, which has since driven many companies to the wall. The latest figures from insolvency trade body R3 indicate that 68 per cent of businesses in Yorkshire and Humber are showing at least one sign of distress, a higher rate than any other region outside London. The optimism of finance directors of large UK corporates has also diminished to its lowest level in more than two years, according to the latest Deloitte CFO Survey, the sharpest decline in corporate optimism since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008. But optimism is abundant among our Growth 100. Driven by quality manufacturing, premium customer service and genuine innovation, they have identified a market opportunity and are forging ahead with expansion domestically and globally.
